Heart Stress Test - A stress test is also called as physical exercises, tests heart tests. This test checks how your heart works under pressure and later it can show if there is a blockage in blood vessels.
You will be given medication or practice on the treadmill or exercise bike
Your doctor will schedule a stress test with:
* Drugs
* Physical exercise
Arrive on time. This exam takes about 1 hour. Plan to be there for 2 hours.
Preparation:
* To stress test with exercise, take the jogging shoes and loose-fitting clothing so you can move with ease. You can wear hospital clothes.
* Do not eat solid foods for 4 hours before testing.
* You should drink fluids, but do not drink liquids with caffeine. Regular caffeine in coffee, tea, chocolate and soft drinks.
* If you will take medication in the morning when going to undergo the test, drink a little water.
* Do not smoke or use tobacco for at least 4 hours before testing. Smoking can affect your test results.
* Spray or nitroglycerin tablets can be used to overcome the chest pain when necessary.
* Bring a list of your medications. Be sure to include any prescriptions and medicines, vitamins and herbal medications that you consume.
During testing
* You will be asked to wear your workout clothes or clothes hospital.
* Small pads will be placed on the chest to check your heart rate. For men, chest hair may need to be shaved first.
* A blood pressure gauge mounted on your arm. Blood pressure and heart rate might be reviewed as often as possible.
* Tell the hospital staff immediately if you experience shortness of breath or pain in the chest.
For the stress test with Drugs:
* After infusion inserted into a vein in your arm.
* Drugs that will make the stress / pressure on your heart will be put in through an IV.
* Stress test ended when the heart rate at a certain stage is reached.
For the Exercise Stress Test:
* You exercise by walking on a treadmill or exercise bicycle.
* This exercise will be more difficult every few minutes.
* Testing will end when you are too tired or have reached a certain heart rate.
After Testing
* You will be asked to sit and rest a few minutes.
* When home, you can return back to normal activity.
* The test results will be sent to your personal physician. Then he will discuss the results with you.
